Moving again

We moved into our first Juneau home in the rain, and moved out in the rain. Although by the time we drove to Brian’s, the rain had stopped and it was just a thick blanket of fog.

You know that feeling of finally settling into a place – when even in the dark you know exactly where the light switch is. I thought of that just now as I fumbled for several seconds to find the light switch in our new bathroom.

As we drove home from the disappointing fireworks (Juneau has a tradition of holding their big show right at midnight of July 4th, so it can be the first town in the country to celebrate the 4)th – from our vantage point at the roundabout, the majority of fireworks disappeared into the fog – I was trying to remember our past three 4th of Julys – where we were on that day while abroad. We couldn’t quite figure it out, giving general guesses. And then, as I was searching for a blank page to write these words on, I found a quarter of an index card tucked in between pages of an old journal. On one side it says: “July 1 (8530).” That number is the total Kenyan shillings we spent that day and below is a breakdown of the costs. For example: “matatu Nairobi 200,” which is the cost of the minivan we took from Thika to Nairobi. “Dinner 1900,” “ice cream 210.” On the other side is July 2. We spent about a quarter of what we had the previous day. We didn’t have the travel costs and dinner that night only cost 370, so we must have splurged the day before. So I’m assuming two days later on the 4th, we were still in Kenya.

Scott has to work on the 4th. A shame. He’s asleep already in our new bed, which is comfortable. I may ride on a float in the parade. I’ll see how I feel in the morning.
