Love Story

Last week in Bethel, I heard one of the most amazing love stories. It wasn’t in a movie or a book; it was from a man by the name of Earl Polk. He was interviewed with StoryCorps by his son who has the same name, Earl Polk.

Earl Polk III asked Earl Polk, Sr. how he met his wife. Earl Polk, Sr. said the first time he met his wife was in a dream. She was running through a field of yellow buttercups. He chased her, trying to catch her, but she kept running. This was a reoccurring dream – chasing a women through a field of yellow buttercups. Earl, who’s originally from Ocean City, New Jersey said he finally caught this woman in Bethel, Alaska. Sometime after he arrived in Bethel in the 1950s, he heard a woman’s laugh and recognized it as the voice of the woman in his dreams. He married this woman, and afterward, never had the dream again.

When he told this story, Earl Polk, Sr. was completely and utterly serious.
