A January of No Sun Until Today

And I don't think I'm exaggerating. As someone who's spent six years in Southeast Alaska, I am very accustomed to the grey, the short days, the rain - the constant, seemingly endless rain. I feel comfortable when the weather is crappy. Most people who live here would say the same, or else we'd move. But this January got to me. It got to everyone. Instead of snow, there was rain. Instead of cold, we got the mid-40s. Instead of everyone talking about skiing, they complained about not skiing. It just felt like the rain would never end and it didn't. Until today. So we took our cross-country skis and headed out the road. Past Spaulding Meadows, past Herbert Glacier and instead opted for Cowee Meadow where we might get maximum time in the glorious sunshine.

It was frigid and windy. But no matter - we reveled in the vitamin D.

And when we skied to Berner's Bay and back in a few hours, we didn't quite get our fill. So we stopped at Eagle Beach during a low tide and allowed Lota to frolick some more.

And frolick he did.
