Today in Wrangell

Here are some images of the day.

Yesterday a Wrangell resident was in this crane transporting a piling (that long piece of wood) when the wind caught the piling and caused the crane to collapse into the water (the extremely cold Alaskan water) – with the person still in it. Luckily, he was able to escape with just a broken leg. I say ‘just’ because apparently similar incidents have occurred and the person died.

On a happier note, the pictures below are of the first and second graders caroling around town. They always carol near the tree while the Light and Power crew are decorating with ornaments made by the students. I love this event. The kids then go to Wells Fargo, city hall, Bobs’, and I’m not sure where else. Along the way, they acquire many candy canes.

Snow Day

It’s almost midnight on the second to last day of November and I just finished writing up the city council story and a fresh blanket of snow has covered the sidewalks and streets. Earlier, when I saw from my desk the snow falling outside the window, I thought my eyes were playing a trick on me.

It’s at times like these, as I’m about to start my 25-minute trek home, when I wish ‘snow days’ existed in Wrangell. Those days when businesses and schools shut down and we were left to sleep late and fill our daytime hours with other things, like sledding and watching bad television.

This

Because Wrangell has, as of late, looked more like this:

I thought it would be nice to remind myself that just this past weekend, it looked like this:

And though it is 4:30 and already fully dark out, I know the time will come around again when the sun stays out longer, when the snow has melted, when I'll again be able to see views like this:

A Wrangell Registry

When Pottery Barn and Bloomingdales are not an option, Sentry Marine and Hardware is definitely the way to go. Here is one local couple's registry for their upcoming wedding:
